Chiba Mamoru, or Tuxedo Mask, epitomizes the tall, dark, and handsome hero. Mysterious throughout the beginning of the series, it is not clear whether or not Tuxedo Mask is on Sailor Moon's side, although he tends to rescue her from the clutches of danger on a regular basis.
Mamoru was raised in an orphanage after his parents died in a car crash and he awoke with amnesia. At the age of 18, he moved out on his own, gained employment, and put himself through college, which he is presently attending during the series.
There is a surprisingly long interval between the beginning of the series and when Usagi and Mamoru become a couple. In early episodes, he and Rei date a few times, but nothing really develops. However, once the love between Mamoru and Usagi takes off, it is unsurpassable -- they are soulmates, and truly the couple that is "meant to be".
Tuxedo mask is well known for making cheesy speeches right before rescuing Sailor Moon, and his main weapon is that of a sharp stemmed rose, although a "smoke bomb" attack is mentioned in the manga.
